Women's Hockey

Gold Medal Ice Hockey for Women and Girls
Tricia Dunn and Katie King

Members of the 1998 USA Olympic Team provide an excellent introductory book on women's no-check hockey.  The book contains both great instruction and an inspiring story of the team’s journey to the Gold Medal.

Too Many Men On The Ice
In Too Many Men on the Ice, authors Julie Stevens and Joanna Avery examine all levels of women's hockey in Canada and the United States, from the growth of the grassroots game to the formation of the Canadian and American National Teams. In-depth interviews with prominent players and quotes from other women involved in hockey, from players to administrators and officials, give fascinating personal perspectives on women's hockey. The book is both a chronicle and a celebration. It reveals that although women come to hockey in a variety of ways and find themselves competing in a variety of circumstances, they share a profound love for the game and an inextinguishable drive to excel.

On the Edge: Women Making Hockey History
On the Edge brings the turbulent world of this steel-edged sport front and centre. Interviews with hockey insiders and star players, vivid photographs, a critical look at the media and the hockey establishment, and the challenge of the first Olympics for women's hockey provide a dramatic look at the history, controversies and extraordinary popularity of the game, while highlighting the talented women who play for the love of the sport. An excellent and current book, Etue and Williams also do a great job in profiling the history of Women's Hockey in each region of Canada.

Proud Past, Bright Future: One Hundred
This book nicely complements On the Edge. While On the Edge is a more current book, this book is more of a "coffee-table book" that details the last 100 years of history of women's hockey. Packed with numerous rare archival photographs and illustrations, as well as comprehensive statistics on three (of the four) IIHF-sanctioned Women's World Hockey Championships, Proud Past, Bright Future is an incomparable feast of lore and legend that handsomely delivers yesterday's glory and tomorrow's promise.

Fitness

Conditioning Twist.gif (5974 bytes)

Complete Conditioning for Ice Hockey, by Peter Twist and Pavel Bure
We have heard our friends say, "I want to play hockey to get into shape."   Wrong!  You need to get into shape to play hockey effectively.  The third period of a close game gives most adult players a lot of motivation to improve their fitness.

Peter Twist provides a comprehensive review of techniques to achieve and maintain optimal fitness.   Although this book is focused on the highly competitive player, most adults can find parts of what Twist recommends to incorporate into their workouts.

Stretching-Anderson.gif (6923 bytes) Stretching by Bob and Jean Anderson
This book is an excellent resource for stretching muscles both prior to playing hockey and most importantly during the critical time after playing.  Stretching has a complete explanation of why stretching is important and how to stretch a muscle.  The book has graphic presentations, which demonstrate the stretch as well as a text explanation.   Stretching routines are provided for everyday activities as well as specific sports and recreational activities. There is a wonderful stretching routine for ice hockey.   The Anderson's have also provided exercises for developing strength, techniques for running and cycling as well as nutritional tips.

Hockey Fitness: Year Round Conditioning on and off the Ice

Videos

Gordie Howe
 on Defense
HOCKEY: DEFENSE—HERE’S HOWE

Gordie Howe's Defense is actually a pretty good instructional video for those who are looking to improve their defensive ability on the ice. A lot of time is spent on how to defend a one-on-one, two-on-one, three-on-one and two-on-two.

The best thing about this video is the recap at the end. It is a combination of all the examples back-to-back with the basic reminders for each situation.  The video emphasizes staying in the middle of the ice, regardless of the number of people you're facing, and force them to the outside where they have less of a shot. Also, rely on your goalie as he's really the third defenseman.

Wayne Gretzky's Train to Win (1999)

This is a very good instructional video.  It covers all aspects of training, conditioning and nutrition.  The coach that narrates the video with Wayne Gretsky is very good.  This tape can be purchased through Amazon’s used sources at a fairly cheap price.  We bought our tape for about $6.

Power Skating

Laura Stamm's Power Skating

Laura Stamm's video is a great complement to her book.  NHL player Doug Brown demonstrates basic skating techniques. The video covers balance, agility, forward and backward stride, crossovers, cornering, stops, starts and explosive speed.    It runs 28 minutes and is available from LauraStamm.com
