A Special Message from Stacey for the 2010 Hockey School

Greeting to all Lifetime Hockey School,

Title: Mind over Matter

I would like start off by welcoming everyone to the 2010 Lifetime hockey school. Due to unforeseen circumstances I will not be coaching power skating at camp this year. I have recently experienced a life changing journey. I was in a severe accident while travelling in Thailand on May 6th 2010.  I had a bad fall on a tour at a waterfall which resulted in many fractures to my body (head, jaw, wrist, back, feet and leg). In result I was in the Thai hospital for one month and one week in Canada. I have endured many surgeries and reconstructive surgery of my face. I have been able to adapt to my condition and have found strength to push me through the journey. Each day I learn something new and am thankful that I am able to persevere.  I have regained my appearance and have learnt how to walk again. Each day I am walking faster and faster and limping less and less.  I am truly blessed and have so many people to thank.  As you can imagine it is hard for me to think of myself of an athlete as I move as slow as a turtle. Nonetheless time heals all wounds.

It is amazing how sports have helped me throughout my life. Most of all it has revealed character, passion and drive. I have learnt to live by “what doesn’t kill can only make you stronger”. Dealing with adversity, pain and suffering is just some of the characteristics I have experienced.  The game of hockey has taught me just that. Whether it is learning how to skate, shoot, body check, game strategies, winning national championships to losing national championships in the end it is all a journey that teaches us life lessons. From my accident I have had to learn how to eat, walk and move again. I had to wear diapers and depend on my mother and the nurses to get me through the simple things in life.  I have come to realize that “victory is simply never admitting defeat.”  I have had the ability to regain strength to deal with the simple events in life and the ability to carry a smile on your face. Attitude is everything!

This year, I challenge each player coming to camp to wake up every morning and to push yourself to your best of your ability. Even when you are tired and want to quit push yourself harder because that is the character that will drive your success.  Unfortunately,   due to my condition I will not be on the ice with you but I will be expecting a full report from Tom and hope to come back in 2011. Push yourself hard, have some fun and carry a big smile on your face.

Best of luck, work hard and bend those knees.

Yours truly, your power skating instructor

Stacy Allen
