Mike has worked in Canada as a coach for many years following his career in the NHL. This includes

Mike had an extensive playing experience which included winning a Stanley cup with Wayne Gretsky.

- 1982 Canadian National All Star Junior Team - Gold medal winner, MVP and leading scorer
- 1982-1985 Buffalo Sabres
- 1983 Rochester Americans - AHL (Calder cup champions)
- 1985-1988 Edmonton Oilers (1987 won the Stanley Cup)
- 1988 Canadian National Team (Team Captain)
- 1988 - 1990 Hartford Whalers
